HOSA: CERT Terms
CERT GOAL - ANSDo the greatest good for the greatest number
CERT's Job in Fire Safety - ANSExtinguishing small fires, preventing additional fires
CERT Priorities - ANSAlways help in emergencies before pro-responders arrive; rescuer safety
is #1. Always work with a partner and always wear safety equipment.
Fire Triangle - ANSFuel, heat, and oxygen - remove one side to stop fire
Class A Fire - ANSOrdinary Combustibles
Class B Fire - ANSFlammable and combustible liquids
Class C Fire - ANSEnergized electrical equipment
Class K Fire - ANSCombustible metals
Class E Fire - ANSCooking oils
Reducing electrical hazards - ANSAvoid "electrical octopus", replace broken or frayed cords,
maintain appliances
L.I.E.S. - ANSLIMIT, ISOLATE, ELIMINATE, SEPARATE
Know where the power shutoffs are for... - ANSAppliances, circuit breakers, fuses
Install in your home... - ANSNatural gas detector and carbon monoxide detector; test the
batteries every six months.
CERT Fire Size-Up - ANSDo we have the right equipment? Are there other hazards? Is the
building structurally damaged? Can we escape? Can we fight the fire safely?
Fire Extinguishers - ANSType A Fires: Water, dry chemicals, carbon dioxide
Type D and K Fires: Specialized fire extinguisher
Higher number on label = greater amount of extinguishing agent
P.A.S.S. - ANSP- PULL
A- AIM
S- SQUEEZE
,S- SWEEP
Fire Suppression DON'Ts - ANS1. Don't get too close
2. Don't fight it alone
3. Don't suppress large fires
4. Don't enter smoke filled areas
Hazardous Materials... - ANS- Can corrode other materials
- Can explode or be easily ignited
- Can react strongly with water
- Are unstable when exposed to heat or shock
- Are toxic to humans, animals, and the environment through absorption, inhalation, injection, or
ingestion
All hazardous material placards are a ______ for CERTS - ANSStop Sign
NFPA 704 Diamond - ANSRed: FLAMMABLE
Blue: HEALTH HAZARD
Yellow: REACTIVITY
White: REACTS WITH WATER, OXIDIZING PROBLEMS, OR SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
(Anything greater than 1: STOP)
START - ANSS- SIMPLE
T- TRIAGE
A- AND
R- RAPID
T- TREATMENT
(30 seconds)
The Three Killers - ANSAirway blockage, immense bleeding, shock
How to Approach a Victim - ANS1. Be sure the victim can see you
2. Identify yourself (name and organization)
3. Request to permission to treat if possible
4. Respect
Open Airway By... - ANSHead-tilt / Chin-lift Method
Arterial Bleeding - ANSArtery Spurts - Controlled by direct pressure
Venous Bleeding - ANSVein Flows - Controlled by Elevation
Capillary Bleeding - ANSCapillaries Ooze - Controlled by Pressure Points
, Shock - ANSA result of ineffective blood circulation; can lead to death of cells, tissues, and
entire organs
Signs of Shock - ANS- Rapid and shallow breathing
- Capillary Refill less than 2 Seconds
- Failure to follow simple commands ("squeeze my hand")
Responding to Mass Casualty Event... - ANSHave a plan, follow it, and document your actions
throughout the casualty event (follow the CERT size up)
Triage - ANSProcess for managing mass casualty events - victims are evaluated, sorted by
urgency of treatment needed
Immediate (I) - ANSRED: Life threatening injuries such as airway obstruction, unconscious,
bleeding, and shock.
Delayed (D) - ANSYELLOW: injuries don't jeopardize victim's life such as pregnancy and
shoulder dislocation.
Minor (M) - ANSGREEN: Walking wounded, ambulatory
Dead (DEAD) - ANSBLACK: No respiration after two attempts to open airway
Never Say ________ - ANS"Dead"
Rescuer Safety During Triage - ANS- If hazmat or terrorist event is suspected, CERT does not
respond. Evacuate as safely as possible.
- Always wear PPE's (helmet, work gloves/non-latex exam gloves, N95 mask, goggles,
protective shoes/work boots)
Triage Process - ANS1. Stop, look, listen and think
2. Conduct voice triage 2 times
3. Start where you stand and follow systematic route
4. Evaluate each victim and tag
5. Treat "I" victims immediately
6. Document triage results
Triage Evaluation - ANS1. Check airway and breathing (less than 30 BPM is normal)
2. Check circulation and bleeding (type of bleeding, cap refill that is less than 2 seconds is
normal)
3. Check mental status (questions)
R.P.M - ANSRespiration, Perfusion, Mental Status
