Definition
Medium A method of communication, for example television, radio, or the internet.
The middle place in the model of communication
Computer-mediated Interaction that humans have with each other using computers as tools to exchange
communication (CMC) text, images, audio and video. Sender and receiver are people. Example: Messenger,
skype, etc.
Media Consumption The sum of information and entertainment media taken in by an individual or group.

Dead media Media that are obsolete or have been forgotten
Old media Forms of analogue rather than digital. Media that are still in use. Example:
Television, radio, newspaper.
Remediation The integration of features of an old medium into a new medium
New media Forms of media that are native to computers, are computational, and rely on
computers for redistribution. Example: Smart phones, computers
Emerging media Communications formats or channels in the process of becoming known as part of a
long evolution of our communication architecture
Synesthesia The production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by
stimulation of another sense or part of the body.
Analogue Relating to or using signals or information represented by a continuously variable
physical quantity such as spatial position, voltage, etc.
Digital media Media stored as digital data.
Digital data Discrete data, usually represented using binary numbers
Digital convergence The ability to view the same multimedia content from different types devices and
thanks to digitization of content and the development of connections methods.
Digital divide The gulf between those who have ready access to computers ant the internet, and
those who do not.
Designer A general term for a person who makes designs for objects.
Interactivity The process of two people or things working together and influencing each other or
the ability of a computer to respond to a user's input.
Human-computer The dialogue between human and machine, the relationship between humans and
interaction (HCI) computers.
Interactive media A method of communication where the feedback (output) from the media comes
from the messaging (input) of its users. Interactive media works with the user's
participation. Examples: Smart phones, robots.
Sensory complexity Refers to the “richness” of media systems. That is, the amount of senses that can be
stimulated. Most systems address the visual, auditory, and tactile senses. But more
is possible.
Interactions design (IxD) A set of practices that give form, behaviors, and capabilities to interactive media.
Human/ User centered A design and management framework that develops solutions to problems by
design (UCD) involving the human perspective in all steps of the problem-solving process.
Usability testing A means for measuring how well people can use a user interface for its intended
purpose
User experience testing A means for measuring the subjective responses people have when they use a user
interface
User interface (UI) The space where interactions between humans and computers occur.
