This map shows the spread of the
forces during the Arab Israeli
conflict in syria.
The division of communities within
Syria by different people and
groups. We can clearly see that in
blue is the opposition, in green the
Syrian armed forces, in orange the
islamic State and in red the kurdish.
We know that there is conflict as
we can see that there are
“contested areas” and different
occupied territories.
We can expect that there are
different communities which are
influenced by different aspects of their culture and religion, which may lead to conflict. We see
geographical conflict due to resources and change in boundaries in a state. Overtime we have seen
boundaries of state change and we have created conflict e.g. Weimar Germany.

How are countries defined?
Countries are defined by a geographical territory(and borders), and a set of laws institutions by a
government. It has a set of customs. Countries can change over time e.g. sudan and south sudan

What is a state?
A division of the territory within a region in a country, independent political entity. Each state has
different laws and political entities.

What is a nation state?
A single nation accounts for the bulk of the population. A state under one government. History, language,
geography, and traditions.

What is a multinational state?
A state which includes is a sovereign entity that comprises two or more nations or states. E.g. America,
Uk, Russia…

, Political conflict might arise in these states.

Origins of the conflict

● 93i BC holy land splits in half,
● 7th century was an arab conquest that spread islam
● Jerusalem was the holy city to 3 religions, christianity, islam and judaism(oldest religion)

● The conflicts that emerged between the two religions
○ 931 BC the kingdom of Judah was split into the Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of
Judah (Jerusalaem was the capital). It was later conquered by the Romans and
therefore led to a significant decrease of the Jewish population. Wanted to break the
connection with the land of Israel called Palestine.
○ Crusades, trying to re-establish christianity in the land of Judah from western europe
○ Creation of the ottoman empire, within we see a dominating arab population living
within the holy land.
○ Jewish diaspora → persecution
○ Zionism:

By the 20th century, the main conflict was who holds claim to the land of palestine
WW1 was a major catalyst for conflict in the Holy land. United Kingdom, make a deal with Arabs that
if they were to attack Turkey they would get self determination and protection.
