In this assignment, I’ve been recently recruited by a new software development company, as a
trainee project manager and been tasked to manage a software development project. The client has
tasked me to manage the development of a scoring system for an annual sporting tournament. I will
research & evaluate two potential solutions to the problem as well as create feasibility studies to
help choose an appropriate solution while outlining the requirements of the project.
Researching Two Alternative Solutions
When researching I had to keep in mind of finding two solutions that would be able to sort the data
of the tournament in an easy to access, readable, editable way. After researching I’ve came up and
concluded two feasible solutions that I believe would solve the problem and potentially meet the
client requirements.
For the first solution I’ve chosen a database solution created through a 3 rd party database program
which is Access that I have prior experience on using it. Databases are useful for storing data as they
provide a structured and efficient way to organize, access, retrieve and update the data within. I
believe this is a good solution to meet the client’s requirements as we can easily store tournament
data in an organised way through tables. For example, tables can be separately made for teams or
individuals, different events, scores, and rankings. Furthermore, data can be easily entered and
sorted automatically.
Outline of Estimated Costings –
Budget £750
Estimated Project Schedule – Three Weeks
Resource Name Type Cost
Trainee Project Manager Worker – Wage £250
Microsoft Office Software Purchase £120
Laptop Hardware £0
Electricity Resource £10
£380
Performance Parameters –
Time: I estimate the project will take about one week to complete, due to the previous
experience on using the software. I can’t determine how much time each task/phase will
take as I haven’t done chosen a methodology yet as well as not created a Gantt chart or a
timeline of each phase within the project.
Cost: I calculated the cost to be around £380 to complete the project with this solution, the
cost could potentially increase if we meet delays which could take longer than the estimated
time.
Quality: I expect the project’s level of quality to be relatively high through this solution, as
I’ve researched and chosen a solution that I believe would be feasible in meeting almost all if
not all of the client’s requirements.
Risks: I don’t believe there will be many risks going through this solution such as delays, as
we have a good 3rd party program that is stable and secure. As well as I have previous
experience on using it, we are less likely to encounter problems which could lead to delays.
Solution 2 – Custom Program
My second solution is creating a program most likely through Visual Studio in Visual Basic (VB); this is
an integrated development environment that is used to develop computer programs. Choosing to
,make your own program from the beginning allows you have full control over how the program is
designed and developed instead of using 3rd party software, as a result you can tailor the program to
meet the specific needs of the client.
Graphic Solutions –
1. This is first page of the program the users see, following the flowchart we are giving three
navigational buttons.
, 2. This an idea of what the user will see if they go through the “View Events” or “Edit Events
“Button they are present through a table of all the previous annual and current events.
Which they can go into further details of each one by clicking on “Go”.
