In this report, I will analyse the project management skills and behaviours that I
applied to my first project development of a scoring system for our client. I will
reflect on my experience and make recommendations for improving my project
management skills and behaviours for the future.
Project Background
The goal of the project was to develop a scoring system for an annual sporting
tournament, where students would compete in a series of events for prizes as a
result a suitable system would need to be created. The project team consisted of
me as the Junior Project Manager, and two developers.
Project Management Skills Applied
Throughout the project, I utilized several project management skills and
behaviours that helped ensure the project’s success. These skills and behaviours
included:
1. Communication: One of the essential skills was effective communication
with the client. Since I chose the waterfall methodology this meant that us
and the client would only communicate during the first stage
(Requirements gathering), as a result it was key for me to get as much
information out of the client so I could then create and effective project
plan that contained objectives, goals, budget, time plans, resource plans,
risk management plans and quality assurance plans. This leads to my next
skill that ensured the project’s success. However I want to add on that I
made sure to have constant meetings after each critical task to ensure
that all team members were on the same page and if there was any
setbacks/issues that I would have to be notified about, so I can look at the
contingency/risk plans we have set in place. Overall, I believe I
demonstrated effective communication between the client and the team
to ensure the project was on track as much as possible.
2. Planning and scheduling: Another essential skill was planning. I believed
that this was the most important part of the project due to the way the
Waterfall methodology worked. If I didn’t have an effective and strong plan
the project would fail.
3. Risk Management: Risk Management was crucial to the project’s success.
As identifying potential risks and issues before the project started meant
