The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is the independent credentialing
body of the American Nurses Association (ANA). It is the largest nurse credentialing
organization in the United States. The new ANCC Adult-Gerontology Primary Care
Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) exam released on January 2013. The dates when some of
the NP specialty exams will be retired are listed in Table 1.1.
The ANCC currently offers certification exams for the following nurse practitioner
(NP) specialties: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Pediatric NP, Adult Nurse Practitioner
(ANP; until 2015), Gerontological NP (until 2015), Acute Care NP (ACNP), Family or
Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health NP (PMHPNP-BC), and Diabetes Management
(Advanced). The School NP exam was retired a few years ago. The application forms
and General Testing and Renewal Handbook are available at the ANCC website.

The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program (AANPCP) is
the independent credentialing body for the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners
(AANP). The AANP merged with the American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP)
in January 2013. They are releasing their new specialty exam for the Adult-Gerontological
Nurse Practitioner (A-GNP) on January 2013. Their Gerontology NP exam was retired
in December 28, 2012); the ANP exam will be retired in 2015.
The AANPCP is currently offering three specialty exams: the ANP (retirement date of
2015), A-GNP exam, and the FNP exam. The AANPCP released the new edition of the
ANP exam and their FNP exam in 2012. The entire application packet and their Candidate
and Renewal Handbook (containing sample questions) can be downloaded from their
website.

Both certifying organizations use Prometric to administer their exams. You can schedule
your exam in real time and receive immediate confirmation. You can also reschedule
or cancel an appointment online (available 24/7) or by calling their National Phone
Registration Center.
There are Prometric Testing Centers located in the United States, Puerto Rico, the
U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Canada, and the Republic of Korea. Bulk registration (five or
more appointments) is also available online at their website.
International Testing for Military Personnel
Military nurses who want to take the exam outside of the United States are allowed to
take their exams at one of Prometric’s “global” testing centers.
Prometric Eligibility ID Number
All test candidates must first have an assigned a Prometric Eligibility ID number
before they can schedule an appointment to take the exam. For both the ANCC and
the AANPCP, the letter with your Prometric ID number will arrive 2 weeks after you
receive their “acceptance” or the “authorization to test” letter. If it does not arrive, it is
important that you call the ANCC or AANPCP as soon as possible.
If you are taking the ANCC exam, your letter will come directly from Prometric. For
those taking the AANPCP exam, your letter will be from the Professional Examination
Service (ProExam).

gram with a specialization in adult NP or adult-gerontology specialty NP program
