,General Information

A WORD OF WELCOME

The Department of Chemistry welcomes you to the practical component of the
course. The experiments that form part of this course have been selected to:

 reinforce your knowledge and understanding of the theoretical content of your
first year Chemistry course,
 develop skills such as observing, recording, measuring and reporting of results,
and
 teach you special techniques, such as weighing, pipetting, titrating, filtration
etc, so that you will become familiar with the basics of laboratory work.

The information contained in the General Information section of this manual applies to
all the practicals of this course. Please take the time to read through it. While in the
laboratory, you are expected to adhere to the rules and instructions as set out in this
document at all times. Failure to comply will result in students being refused entry to the
laboratory.

For each experiment that form part of this course a complete set of instructions is given.
You should use these to prepare yourself for the practical sessions. Additional
information will be given during the pre-prac briefing at the start of each practical
session.

, General Information

iKAMVA

All the information you will need to successfully complete this course will be posted on the
114/116 iKamva site. Make sure that you are able to access the iKamva site
(https://ikamva.uwc.ac.za) since you will have to complete a quiz on the site before the
practical. The pre-prac quiz will be available for you to complete at any time during the week
before your practical. Please note that the quiz will be closed (and you won’t be able to
complete it anymore) at 13:00 on the day of your prac. If your name isn’t on the system
generated list of students who completed the work by that time, you will not be allowed into
the lab.

DAY, LAB AND LOCKER ALLOCATION
We have 4 labs available for 1 st year practicals (A, B, C and D). Each lab has 76 lockers
(working spaces) and one student will be assigned to each locker. You will work in pairs
(the student on the left end of the bench will pair up with the student next to him/her, the
third and fourth student will work together, etc.) and you may not work at a different set of
lockers than where you were assigned.

SICK NOTE PROCEDURE

If you miss a practical you have to submit a sick note from a registered medical professional.
Write the following on the FRONT of the note, and then hand it in to Mrs Grové:
Your name and surname
Student number
Date of the prac that you missed
Number of the prac that you missed (eg Exp 2.3)
Your prac day and locker number (eg Thu locker 321)
