Soul, mind and body (topic 1)
Body Mind and Soul – Ontological Argument. (In B,M+S he states that only the cognito
is true however in OA he also says that the triangle having 180 degrees in its angles is
undisputed truth the same way God’s existence must be. Hypocrite much?)
Body Mind and Soul – Religious Experience. (Bit of a far off link but Guru Nanak drank
the nectar and reached enlightenment, this could support the problem with dualism
that there is an interaction between mind and body that the Siddhartha Gautama
example also supports).
Soul- often understood to be the non-physical essence of a person.
Dualism- the belief that reality can be divided into two distinct parts, such as good and
evil or physical and non-physical.
Substance dualism- the belief that the mind and body exist as two separate realities
Materialism- the belief that only physical matter exists and the mind can be explained in
terms of chemical energy in the brain.
Intro- what does it mean to be human, are we merely composed of matter or is
there something else within us?
Materialists would say this is correct, yet substance dualists such as Plato and
Descartes would disagree.
The soul (para 1)
What is the soul? Means the same thing as ‘the self’. For example ‘I liked it’ = ‘my
soul liked it’
Some people think that God has given us a soul so that we can develop a
relationship with him and exist in his presence.
o However others think that this is ridiculous and we are merely made up of
complex matter, and all of our thoughts and emotions die when the body
dies.
The ‘Mind-Body Problem’ refers to the intellectual debate concerning the nature
of the mind, the body, and the relationship between the two. Are the mind and
body separate things? Is one spiritual and the other physical? Or, should we see
the mind and body simply as aspects of one physical self?
