Assignment 2, Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
The material of this course book is clearly structured, with a warmer, a body and a plenary. It also provides
language activities where the four skills are covered and the book follows a logical structure with activities
building up from previous activities. The material gets progressively more difficult by beginning with
presenting the new topic and then moving on to more difficult language items , ultimately ending in writing
your won report to check your language skills. While this unit makes use of recycling and revision here and
there, it quickly moves on the next task. I would prefer a bit more revision to check understanding of the
topic. There is no mention of a teacher’s guide although they do mention on page 10 to turn to page 106 to
check your answers.
The book makes good use of pair work as well as individual work and exercises. Photographs and illustrations
are all attractively done and the work is clearly presented. Although there is a good balance between all four
skills, I would prefer more pronunciation exercises as this unit only consist of 3 pronunciation exercises. There
are many activities focusing on different language items and skills and the text make use of the continuous
tense which is appropriate for this class. The reading and listening tasks are relevant to the topic at hand. I
didn’t find anything offensive in this book and the make use of diverse people in their examples which I liked.
Although the unit provides a variety of practice activities, tasks and group discussions, there is no mention of
a test anywhere.
I cannot really tell if the book is affordable or not as I don’t know the financial situation of the school or
student, but printing in colour is very expensive and this unit alone consist of a lot of pictures and colour.
According to the scope and sequence of this book no grammar reference pages or vocabulary list is provided
for the students.
In conclusion, this course book ticks almost all the boxes of the evaluation checklist (The TEFL Academy,
2018) but there is a few things that I can add on, but I would like to use this course book as it is a well-
designed and structured example of a course book, I would just add a few things in my planning phase.
