, Field trips have been regarded as one of the teaching strategies that teachers
can use real-life experiences to expose learners to concepts learnt in class.
Although field trips have not been exclusively linked to better learning, they
remain one of the most successful methods of inspiring learners to enjoy the
subject (Diphoko et al. 2016: 67). As a future Tourism teacher, it is essential
that you plan to include at least one field trip a year as part of your Tourism
teaching activities, either with one grade or all your FET grades. For this
assessment task, you are expected to plan a field trip for your Tourism
learners. Choose an attraction, establishment or destination, linked to the
Grade 11 curriculum, and draft the proposed field trip. You should include the
following information: 1. Name of the attraction, establishment or destination
and a brief description of the proposed field trip location/site.
Attraction: Kruger National Park Description: The Kruger National Park is one
of South Africa's most iconic and diverse wildlife reserves, spanning nearly
20,000 square kilometers of savannah, woodlands, and riverine forests. It's
home to an incredible array of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, elephant,
buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros) as well as numerous other species of
mammals, birds, and reptiles. The park offers visitors the opportunity to
experience the beauty and wonder of Africa's natural landscapes and wildlife
up close through guided game drives, bush walks, and self-drive safaris.
2. Proposed date and duration of the field trip.
2. Your reasons as to why you chose this particular location (e.g., close to
school, environmentally significant or educational site).
I chose the Kruger National Park as the field trip location for several reasons:
1. Educational Value: The park provides an unparalleled opportunity for students to learn
about biodiversity, conservation, and ecotourism. Students will have the chance to
observe various ecosystems and wildlife habitats, gaining hands-on experience in
understanding the interdependence of species and the importance of preserving natural
environments.
2. Cultural and Historical Significance: Kruger National Park is not only a natural wonder
but also holds cultural and historical significance. Students can learn about the rich
cultural heritage of the region, including the indigenous communities that have lived in
and around the park for centuries.
3. Proximity to Curriculum: The Grade 11 Tourism curriculum often covers topics related to
ecotourism, wildlife tourism, and conservation. A visit to Kruger National Park aligns
perfectly with these themes, providing a real-world context for classroom learning.
