THE MEDIATING ROLE OF SAFETY BEHAVIOUR: INVESTIGATING THE
INFLUENCE OF PSYCHOLOGICAL MOTIVATORS ON LOST TIME INJURIES IN THE
OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY

, Human Factors and Lost Time Injuries in the Oil and Gas Industry
The brief discussion in the preceding chapter established the influence of safety
behaviour on psychological motivators and lost time injuries relationship. Naghavi,
Mortazavi, and Hajizadeh (2019) suggest that supervisory and organisational levels
accounted for more than 77% of causal factors based on accident reports. Khdair,
Shamsudin, and Subramanim (2011) agree that organisations should regularly modify
and update their managerial practices to enhance safety performance in their day-to-
day operations. This is evidenced in the study by Jafarinodoushan and Abdar (2021),
which focused on major causes of human errors and relevant solutions to minimise
them within the oil and gas industry, acknowledging that inadequate equipment, lack of
experience and lack of skills are the primary factors impacting the occurrence of injuries
caused by human error. However, Khdair, Shamsudin, and Subramanim (2011) argue
that leadership styles are essential in enhancing organisational safety performance by
instigating future strategies for improving employee safety behaviour and overall
organisational safety performance. Iqbal et al. (2021) confirm Khdair, Shamsudin, and
Subramanim (2011) argument while suggesting that organisational leadership should
aim to prevent occupational injuries by addressing issues impacting the organisation at
every level, including external impacts beyond the organisational control. However,
Iqbal et al. (2021) did not justify their argument by providing detailed recommendations
to oil and gas industry organisations, thus limiting the significance of their findings to the
current study. Nevertheless, despite the contrasting views on the causal human factors
of lost time injuries, the present study acknowledges the significance of leadership
styles influencing employee safety behaviour and overall organisational safety
performance.
Human factors significantly influence the occurrence rate of lost time injuries
within the oil and gas industry. Furthermore, research has shown that the longer the
employment duration before an employee experiences their first lost-time injury, the less
the likelihood of them undergoing several lost-time injuries (Tao et al., 2019). Nwankwo
et al. (2022) note that catastrophic accidents witnessed in the oil and gas industry
significantly influence employee lost time injuries, highlighting the significance of
implementing stringent accident analysis and prevention techniques. The analysis by
