Unit 20: Biomedical Science

Task 1 - Composition of human blood
Task 2 - Urinalysis
Task 3 - Medical applications of histology and cytology

Task 1 scenario
In order to enhance learning opportunities, BTEC Level 3 Applied Science students are able to
complete work experience placements within their local hospital. Placements would enable students
to work alongside a qualified Healthcare Scientist observing the completion of a wide range of
laboratory tests that are designed to aid the diagnosis and treatment of blood-related diseases.
On completion of a placement, I will demonstrate the knowledge I have gained by producing a report
to College peers

Task 2 scenario
In order to enhance learning opportunities, BTEC Level 3 Applied Science students may be able to
complete work experience placements within their local hospital. Placements would enable students
to work alongside a qualified Healthcare Scientist to understand the diagnosis of a range of health
disorders and infections which can be detected through urinalysis. On completion of the placement,
students would be expected to demonstrate the knowledge they gained by preparing three patient
case studies

Task 3 scenario
In order to enhance learning opportunities, BTEC Level 3 Applied Science students are able to
complete work experience placements within local hospitals. Placements would enable students to
work alongside a qualified Histologist to assist in the preparation of biological samples for
microscopic examination and to observe and compare abnormal cells and learn some basic principles
of histopathology. On completion of a placement, I am expected to demonstrate the knowledge I
have gained by delivering a report to my College peers.

Task 1- Composition of human blood

, Erythrocytes
Erythrocytes are a red blood cell in humans which typically have a
biconcave shape without a nucleus. They are produced in the bone
marrow and contain a protein which is called haemoglobin which
carries oxygen from the lungs to various parts of the body, produces
red blood cells with its distinctive red pigment and erythrocytes also
carries carbon dioxide which is taken from the tissues to the lungs.
Erythrocytes play an important role as they are responsible for the
movement of nutrients and gases throughout the body. These
specialised cells can perform their function due to their particular
structure and composition. The normal range is generally 4.35 to 5.65 million red blood cells per
microliter of blood for men and 3.92 to 5.13 million red blood cells per mcL of blood for women.

Leucocytes
Leukocytes are white blood cells which are made in the bone marrow, it can be found in the blood
and also in lymph tissue. Leukocytes play a role in the immune system as they aid the body to fight
against infection and foreign pathogens. The
amount of Leukocytes in the blood indicates
health, the normal number of WBCs in the
blood is 4500 to 11000 WBCs per microliter [1] .
There are three types of leukocytes which make
up granulocytes: Neutrophils are strong white
blood cells that eliminate fungus and bacteria. A single nucleus with several lobes is present in these
cells. The majority of white blood cells in circulation are neutrophils. They travel across tissue in
search of infection sites after being chemically attracted to bacteria, basophils are the least common
white blood cell, they release chemicals to primarily treat allergies and alert the body to infections
they feature a multilobed nucleus, and the immune-stimulating substances histamine and heparin
are found in their granules. Eosinophils are a part of an allergic response, they are responsible for
destroying parasites and cancerous cells in blood smears, the double-lobed nucleus of these cells
appears U-shaped. Eosinophils are typically located in the connective tissues of the intestines and
stomach.

Thrombocytes
Thrombocytes are fragments of megakaryocytes, (hematopoietic cells which are located in the bone
marrow and are responsible for the production of thrombocytes). They are relatively large cells
found in the bone marrow, the bone marrow contains stem cells which can develop into
thrombocytes. They support the formation of blood clots that stop or reduce bleeding and promote
wound healing. They are also known as platelets which are
specialised red blood cells. The normal thrombocyte count is
150,000-450,000 thrombocytes per microliter, thrombocytes
are small plates with no colour. Platelets produce a clot when
a blood artery tears, sealing the tear to stop bleeding.
