France is a historically Catholic country and they have a history of being xenophobic. They have
previously even discriminated against different forms of Christianity. Before the french
revolution people were required to pay a tax to the Catholic church. During the french
revolution, France took a strong stance with secularism however it was just a ploy to exploit
workers that had nothing to do with secularism. One good thing about the revolution was that it
granted minority religions full rights. The minority religions were Judaism and Protestantism.
The French revolution did great things for taking power away from the Catholic church.

l'eglise.

However, in 1813 Catholicism became the state’s religion again. Napoleon was also a huge
supporter of Catholic beliefs so that also helped Catholicism stay dominant as he was very well
respected. In general, the government has been trying to push secularism since the early 1900s
but the public has remained majority Catholic. In addition to Catholicism in France alone, France
also has a history of trying to spread Catholicism everywhere with colonization.

Now, this contributes to Islamaphobia because Catholicism says that Islam is a false religion. So,
if the public is majority Catholic it is obvious that many people will not respect Islam. France
even has a secularism law that bans religious head coverings in schools which disproportionately
affects Muslim women. There is also a ban of face coverings in public which interferes with
niqabs. This is ironic because people are not being charged for wearing masks in public. France
continues to be incredibly Islamaphobic and resistant to change.
