, Question 1 1.1 Define one of the theoretical assumptions of communication,
as discussed in Learning Unit 1, and provide a brief explanation. (5) 1.2
Compare and contrast Bandura’s social learning theory with Piaget’s theory of
cognitive development in terms of their views on how individuals learn and
develop. (10) 1.3 Analyse the implications of Skinner's behaviorism theory in
shaping teaching methodologies and classroom management strategies. How
can educators apply the principles of reinforcement to optimise student
learning? (20)
Question 1.1: Define one of the theoretical assumptions of communication, as discussed in
Learning Unit 1, and provide a brief explanation.
One theoretical assumption of communication is the Transactional Model. In this model,
communication is viewed as a dynamic process where both the sender and the receiver
simultaneously send and receive messages. It emphasizes the reciprocity and interdependence of
communication, suggesting that both parties contribute to the meaning-making process. Unlike
linear models where communication is seen as a one-way process, the Transactional Model
recognizes the complexity and fluidity of communication interactions.
Question 1.2: Compare and contrast Bandura’s social learning theory with Piaget’s theory
of cognitive development in terms of their views on how individuals learn and develop.
Bandura’s social learning theory emphasizes the role of observational learning and social
reinforcement in shaping behavior. According to Bandura, individuals learn by observing others,
imitating their behaviors, and experiencing the consequences of those behaviors, whether
positive or negative. Social learning theory also highlights the importance of cognitive factors,
such as attention, retention, motor reproduction, and motivation, in the learning process.
In contrast, Piaget’s theory of cognitive development focuses on the internal processes of
individual learners. Piaget proposed that individuals progress through stages of cognitive
development, namely the sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal
operational stages. He believed that children actively construct their understanding of the world
through interactions with their environment, including assimilation and accommodation
processes. Piaget’s theory underscores the significance of cognitive maturation and
developmental stages in shaping how individuals perceive and interact with the world.
