, Introduction
Why maintain an Aircraft?
For Safety: guarantee continued airworthiness of the aircraft
Operational reasons: with a good technical condition is the change of an technical
interruption smaller
The asset value
Scheduled Unscheduled
Plannable Difficult to plan
Lead time can be determined Time is gamble
Calm Hectic
Shopping around Money is no issue
Maintenance concepts:
Hard-time component exchanges (HT): some safety-related components have a defined life
limit, they need to be replaced when this limit is reached.
o It is plannable
o You throw away the parts which may could still be used
Life limited parts
Landing gear parts
Fire extinguishers
On-condition maintenance (OC): components that need to be replaced or serviced only when
the specific component fails or shows a degraded performance.
o For an engine the borescope technique could be used
Condition monitoring (CM): involves the monitoring of failure rates, removals etc. of
individual components or systems that do not have a definite lifetime or a noticeable wear-
out period. CM is not a failure preventive process as are HT and OC.
o Complex systems: electronics components and avionics
o Where failure has no serious effect on safety or airworthiness (cabin light)
Sorts of parts:
Expendables / Scrap: parts that will be thrown away
Consumables: parts that will be used
Rotables: will be used for a longer time
Repairables: there is always a way to fix it
Bogus parts: parts without licenses
o Lower price
o Fast service
o Not airworthiness
Parts manufacturer approval (PMA): parts that are not made by the OEM, but can be used to replace
those that are. They can provide comparable warranty support, reduced lead times, reduced cost.
The parts are FAA and EASA approved, so they are not bogus parts (not airworthy part).
Line maintenance activities:
Transit-check (oil level check, general visual inspection)
48 hours check/ daily check (wheels and brakes, aircraft hydraulic fluid level)
A check, every 750 -1500 flight hours, takes 1 day
