- juxtaposition 'planting' and 'digging' emphasises the
repetitive aspect of labour and respect for his active char-
acter
- 'potatoes', in lit are a symbol of nourishment, of suste-
nance, of the bonds that link families together. This con-
veys their very platonic bond that despite him being miles
away, she still feels his close proximity so much so she can
see him
- a staple in diet emphasises on his rural life
