Unit 1 government policies and the public services
P2- describes the role of government departments in relation to public services, including their
responsibilities.
The government of the UK exercises its executive authority through a number of
government or departments of state. A department is composed of employed officials,
known as civil servant, and is politically accountable through a minister. There are also a
number of non-ministerial departments. These are headed by senior civil servants, but are
linked to a ministerial department through whose ministers they are accountable
to parliament. Departments serve to implement the policies of Her Majesty's Government,
regardless of the government's political composition.
Education
The Department for Education is responsible for children’s services and education,
including early years, schools, higher and further education policy, apprenticeships and
wider skills in England. Their aim is to provide world-class education, training and care for
everyone, whatever their background. It will make sure that everyone has the chance to
reach their potential, and live a more fulfilled life. It will also create a more productive
