D2- Evaluate the impact of government policies on public services and the communities they serve.

Each public service has its own set of policies, these policies impact each public service. These
policies include, budget cuts, the Equality Act 2010 and many more. Not having policies will lead to
unfairness and discrimination which violates the human rights act.

The Equal Pay Act 2010

This act is set out to ensure that men and women get paid the same when performing the same
work, having this act is important as it abides with human rights and doesn’t discriminate against
anyone. As well as this the act assures that those who come from different backgrounds get paid
equally too such as those with disabilities. In 1970 it was common for women in the UK to receive
low pay rates than men, specifically those in the private sector. however, throughout WW1 women
were made to take on the job roles of the men as they were forced to go into the army, but as soon
as they realised that they were getting paid lower than the men even though they were carrying out
the exact same job it resulted in several strikes happening as they demanded to have the same pay
as men.

In the public services the Equal Pay Act is important as both genders work for these services. If men
and women get paid differently this will result in issues as it will affect how well they work when in
the workplace, for example if a female police officer gets paid lower than a male one even when
doing the same work then they will feel as they aren’t good enough and will not perform to the best
of their ability.

An article published by The Telegraph in March 26th 2018 which shows that the Equal Pay Act has
impacted the police force as 7 female managers had complained that they weren't receiving the
same pay as male's who were carrying out the same job as them. But because of the Equal Pay Act
being implemented this meant that their needs were dealt with and a claim was launched so that
the female managers could have the same pay as males. This shows that the act is important in the
public services as they take it seriously. Not having the act would have resulted in the force losing
many female officers as they won't be motivated enough to stay knowing that males are getting paid
more than them which will have resulted in higher crime rates in various areas, but because of the
loss of female officers that means that it may be difficult to keep the crimes under control as there
won't be enough officers to deal with them.

As well as in the public services this act has also impacted those in the wider society, for example
those with businesses are aware of how important it is to pay their employees equally regardless of
their gender, this is important as it doesn't discriminate and it means employees won't leave due to
unequal pay. Having workers leave will result in businesses not being able to run as they won't have
enough employees leading to unsuccessful businesses. having equal pay will also meet everyone's
human rights and result in a non-discriminatory society.

In the guardian there’s a case with a title with ‘Female Birmingham council workers win £200m
equal pay case’ this states how female workers in the wider society including cleaners, lollipop ladies
were getting paid less than males who did the same job. As well as this the article quotes 'Women
were excluded from bonuses of up to 160%', this shows that they won the case and that because of
the equal pay act in place that it helped them to fight for their case, this suggests that the act is
