Wat is een stoma?
Een stoma is een kunstmatige uitgang voor ontlasting en/of urine. Het is een opening van de
darm in de huid voorop de buik. Een stoma moet worden aangelegd wanneer de ontlasting
en/of urine het lichaam niet langs de natuurlijke weg kan verlaten. Ook kan het nodig zijn
om na een darmoperatie de darm rust te geven.
Het is belangrijk om te weten dat met een stoma de ontlasting of/en urine niet meer
opgehouden kan worden. Dit is normaal gesproken wel mogelijk dankzij de kringspier van de
anus. Wanneer de ontlasting/urine de stoma verlaat, moet dit worden opgevangen. Daar zijn
speciale opvangmaterialen voor en methodes om het opvangen van de ontlasting.
Een stoma kan tijdelijk of blijvend zijn. Een tijdelijke stoma wordt bijvoorbeeld aangelegd om
een darmdeel rust te geven. Een blijvende stoma kan nodig zijn wanneer de hele dikke darm
moet worden weggehaald. Een stoma kan dubbelloops of eindstandig zijn. Een dubbelloops
stoma heeft twee openingen naast elkaar. Uit de ene opening komt ontlasting, uit de ander
alleen slijm (afkomstig van het slijmvlies van de darm). Een tijdelijke stoma op de dunne
darm is vaak dubbelloops. Een eindstandig stoma heeft één opening.
