and their influence on interactions. Then explore the communication guidelines within the
Speech and Language Therapy sector and how they impact the interactive process.
Communication’s effectiveness is subjective to each interaction, influenced by beliefs, values,
and confidence. An ensured way to build confidence when communicating to refine
interpersonal skills. Interpersonal skills are defined by Makely (2013) as the ability to interact
with other people. This skill is an essential to the workplace as it allows a person to effectively
communicate with others especially when negotiating, problem solving and working with others,
which are required skills for most roles.
Communication is an innate skill that individuals use every day by exchanging thoughts,
messages, or information with the aim of understanding (De Janasz et al., 2018). Percentages
may vary from person to person, but it is estimated we spend 70% of our time communicating
(Adler et al.,2013). Understanding is paramount to effective communication to avoid wasted
time and misunderstandings, principally in the workplace. Effective communication is when the
message is sent by a sender to a recipient encoded in a way that is suitable for their chosen

understand and respond to the sender. However, when using communication channels such as
texting the recipient may struggle to decipher key aspects that alter how the message is
received due to a lack of nonverbal cues like body language (Morgan, 2020). Communication
