Deinstitutionalization - people in an institution that are released into the community to get rehab there. Stigma - people treated differently due to mental illness (prejudice & discrimination) Mentally Healthy Characteristics - 1.) Realistic perspective on life 2.) Productive member of society (i.e., goes to work, school) 3.) Positive self-esteem 4.) People with mental illness have difficulty with these things DSM - medical diagnosis given by a doctor or psychiatrist. (Nursing diagnosis is different) Mental Health continuum - rate pt mental health Voluntary admission - can leave the hospital Involuntary - has to have evidence (danger to others or self) Immediate detention (involuntary admission) - Often initiated by the police and is a 24 hour hold Emergency detention (involuntary admission) - Has to go through a court. Passed through a judge and a physician and is a 72 hour hold Commitment (involuntary admission) - legally obligated or mandated to go through with treatment; can vary in time What kind of care do we want? - The least restrictive; try to give as much freedom as possible Medical Battery - intentional or unauthorized contact/actions Ex: giving a person medicine without their consent or a basis to do so False Imprisonment - detained someone that was voluntary; no basis to hold them (nurses know legal status of their patient) When is the ONLY time you do not respect confidentiality? - If child abuse is known of or suspected (our obligation to report) What to do if patient refuses medication? - talk with them, educate them, and figure out their concerns. (cannot force) Maslow hierarchy needs: - *Survival needs (bottom of pyramid) *Safety needs *Love and belonging
