Theories of Communication
This assignment will look at the 2 theories of communication used by
professionals in health and social care. Argyles communication cycle is
used between two individuals, this could be between a professional and
their service user, or between colleagues. The other theory of
communication which will be discussed is Tuckman’s stages of group
interaction, this communication is between a group of people, it can be
used in multi-professional or multi-agency settings and also between
professionals and the service user’s family. Communication is one of the
key ways in which we build and maintain relationships with other
individuals, this is why it is so important to know how to communicate
effectively as a health and social professional.

they can respond well and feel comfortable expressing their opinions and
feeling. This communication cycle is a 6-stage process; the idea occurs,
message coded, message sent, message received, message decoded, and
message understood. The theory
doesn’t apply when communicating
in group situations and is only used
between 2 individuals.
The cycle starts off with an idea
occurs, this this is where a person
thinks of something about a certain
subject which they would like to
