Introduction
I have been asked to join the IT department of a small manufacturing company as an IT
support technician. The company relies heavily on various computer applications for its daily
operations, including stock control, manufacturing, order processing, and employee
management. Currently, all data and applications are stored on servers located at the
company's headquarters. I will be producing an analytical report for my supervisor where I
will be addressing cloud computing technologies and services. Additionally, this report also
explores the potential benefits and drawbacks of using cloud computing in business and how

it assists the business. I will compare the different cloud technologies and models such as
SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS.

Cloud computing is a term used to refer to using the internet to access and manage
computing resources and services, like storing data or running software, without needing to
own or maintain physical hardware. Some of the computing resources are; CPU, SSD’s,
middleware, operating systems and network protocols. Etc.


How it aims
The manufacturing company currently relies on an on-premises IT infrastructure located at
the head office to support various critical functions including stock control, manufacturing,
order processing, and personnel management.

Stock control uses a specific application to manage inventory levels, track goods movement,
and make stock replenishment functional. The company uses dedicated software
applications for stock control, likely running on on-premises servers like Microsoft office.
These applications handle inventory tracking, management, ensuring adequate stock levels
to meet demand while trying to minimize excess cost of inventory. The data related to stock
control is stored and managed within the company's internal servers.

In manufacturing, it plays a crucial role, likely involving the use of specialized software
applications for production planning, scheduling, and monitoring. These applications may
also interface colliding with machinery and equipment on the factory floor for automation
and real-time data collection. The IT infrastructure supporting the manufacturing process
likely includes on-premises servers and networking equipment to make communication
between different manufacturing systems possible. It oversees production processes,
monitors equipment performance, and ensures quality control.

In order processing, it handles customer orders from receipt to fulfillment, including order
entry, tracking, and invoicing, manages sales transactions, and coordinates delivery
schedules. IT systems are most likely used to manage this process efficiently, with
applications running on on-premises servers to handle order management, inventory
allocation, and shipping logistics. This system is combined with the company's inventory
management system to ensure correct stock availability and prompt order fulfilment.

In employee management, it uses an application/system for HR functions including HRIS
(Human Resource Information Systems) for employee records such as payroll processing,
attendance tracking, time tracking and performance management. These systems help
organize administrative tasks and ensure compliance with labor regulations. These

applications are likely hosted on internal servers and accessed by authorized personnel for
HR-related tasks.

The current on-premises IT deployment serves the company's needs adequately, providing
control and customization over the infrastructure and applications. It ensures data privacy
and security, which is crucial for sensitive business operations such as stock control and
personnel management. However, there are some limitations and challenges:

 On-premises infrastructure may have limitations in adaptability, making it
challenging to rapidly adjust resources to accommodate fluctuations in demand or
business growth.



 Managing and keeping on-premises servers and infrastructure requires dedicated IT
personnel and resources, including hardware maintenance, software updates, and
troubleshooting.
 Ensuring that a disaster recovery and business continuity plans can be complex and
costly with on-premises infrastructure, requiring unnecessary systems and data
backups.

To regards to the on-premises IT depending on what you choose you can enable the
company to achieve the following:

 Lower cost of IT:

Manufacturing organizations can reap many advantages by using cloud technologies. One
important benefit is adaptability, which enables businesses to easily change resources in
response to changing business requirements, guaranteeing peak performance and cost
effectiveness. Reducing the first capital expenditure on hardware and infrastructure can
result in cost savings and a more predictable operational expenditure model. In addition to
offering accessibility and flexibility, cloud-based solutions provide remote access to data and
apps, improving employee flexibility and cooperation. Furthermore, cloud service providers
have strong data redundancy and disaster recovery capabilities, guaranteeing data integrity
and business continuity if natural disasters or hardware malfunctions.

To improve operational efficiency, the company could consider migrating to a Software as a
Service (SaaS) solution for inventory management, which provides real-time visibility into
inventory levels, automates stock replenishment processes, and offers adaptability. In
manufacturing, a Platform as a Service (PaaS) solution could enable greater flexibility and
agility in production processes. A hybrid cloud approach for order processing could be
beneficial, allowing the company to use both on-premises and cloud-based solutions. In
employee management, transitioning to a cloud-based Human Capital Management (HCM)
solution could simplify HR processes and improve workforce efficiency. These cloud solutions
can enhance operational efficiency, adaptability, and flexibility for the company.
