De Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R) beoogt dispositioneel optimisme te meten. Dit
construct wordt gedefinieerd als de algemene neiging om te geloven dat de toekomst meer
positieve dan negatieve gebeurtenissen zal brengen. Daarentegen staat dat pessimistische
mensen eerder negatieve gebeurtenissen verwachten.
Meetinstrument
Het meetinstrument is de Nederlandse vertaling van de LOT-R (zie Bijlage A). De vragenlijst
bestaat uit tien items, waarvan drie positief (1,4, en 10) en drie negatief (3,7 en 9)
geformuleerde items, en vier filler-items (2,5,6 en 8). Deze worden beantwoord aan de hand
van een 5-punts Likertschaal van 0 (helemaal mee oneens) tot 4 (helemaal mee eens).
Interviewstrategie
Het cognitieve interview beoogt elk item op taalgebruik, logica en structurele problemen te
analyseren. Het doel hiervan is om suggesties te doen voor verbeteringen in de vragenlijst.
De gehanteerde strategie is om systematisch elke vraag uit de vragenlijst te stellen, gevolgd
door een gelijktijdige verbal probe zoals voorbereid (zie Bijlage B). De keuze voor gelijktijdige
probing is, zodat de informatie dan nog vers in het geheugen zit van de geinterviewde.
De probes richten zich voornamelijk op voorbeelden en parafrases om de interpretatie en
helderheid van de gestelde vraag door de geinterviewde te beoordelen. Ook is er na elke
vraag ruimte voor opmerkingen en vragen van de geinterviewde over de desbetreffende
vraag.
