Thales: Had niet gelijk qua oerstof, maar water is toch wel heel erg belangrijk.
Anaximander: In die tijd heel gewaagd om met een abstract onderwerp te komen.
Pythagoras: Bedenker van een van de bekendste vooronderstellingen van de wetenschap,
namelijk dat het weleens zo zou kunnen zijn dat we de werkelijkheid kunnen begrijpen door
middel van wiskunde.
Pythagoras: Had geen oerstof benoemd, maar zijn basisgedachte was getallen.
Heraclitus: Was een van de weinige filosofen die afging op zintuiglijke waarneming. Alles
stroomt/verandert.
Alle Natuurfilosofen: Denken gaat voor de zintuiglijke waarneming.
Democritus: Hij dacht dat de werkelijkheid was opgebouwd uit ondeelbare deeltjes
(Atomisme)
Empirisme (Heraclitus): Kennis is gebaseerd op zintuiglijke waarneming
Rationalisme (Parmenides): Je moet je zintuigen wantrouwen en afgaan op het denken.
Materialisme: Alles is opgebouwd uit deeltjes/stof. → Kunnen dingen bestaan als het niet
bestaat uit materie?
Sofisten: Houden zich bezig met praktisch filosofische vraagstukken → Hoe leef je een
goed en gelukkig leven? Wat is een rechtvaardige samenleving?
Relativisten (hoort bij sofisten): Gaan ervan uit dat er niet één echte,absolute waarheid
bestaat → Ligt aan opvattingen, omstandigheden, cultuur etc.
Universalisten (hoort meer bij presocraten): Het standpunt dat er absolute waarheden
bestaan (niet afhankelijk van plaats, tijd, omstandigheden, maar voor iedereen hetzelfde,
onveranderlijk).
Ze waren van mening: Je bent of relativist of universalist, maar nu vinden we dat er
veel meer dingen tussen zitten.
