Police officers and Detectives
Task 1 – Police officers/detectives
1. What is the role of police officers when a crime has taken place?

Typically the first responder, assess the danger to the public and aim to secure the scene of the crime and
safeguard the victim(s) and general public. Securing the scene avoids potential contamination
May need to provide medical assistance to victim(s) and potentially arrest suspects if they are still at the
scene. Too start the initial investigations and set up the scene for wider investigation process to take
place

2. What is meant be the term ‘golden hour’?

Period of time immediately after a crime has been taken place. Officers may take
statements from potential passers-by and eye witnesses. Ensure no time is wasted in
order to establish the facts.

3. What is the role of police detectives?

Manage wider team when it comes to criminal investigations. Typically lead on complex cases
which require painstaking efforts to gather evidence and toughly investigate the incident for a
number of angles. Specialise in certain areas such as fire arms, domestic abuse, etc.
Take lead when it comes to deploying specialist units during investigations such as mounted
rescue, air support and underwater team

, Unit 3: Crime Scene to Courtroom
AC1.1 Evaluate the effectiveness of the roles of personnel involved in criminal investigations

Stretch activity – Evaluation (Mark band 3)
Research: What criticisms or failures have the police been accused of when attending and
investigating crimes such as domestic abuse and hate crimes?

Have been poorly dealt with by the police at the initial stages of investigations
Accused of ‘systemic failure’ to protect victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence, to protect
the ‘highly vulnerable section’ of the population
Often heavily criticised for failing to secure scenes of crimes and preserve vital evidence

Task 2 - Stephen Lawrence case
Introduction to the case of Stephen Lawrence: Interview of Duwayne Brooks the friend of Stephen
Lawrence https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEwK1CsHqaA

Research the case of Stephen Lawrence:
1. Outline the case of Stephen Lawrence.

On April 22 1993, Stephen Lawrence (18) was murdered in an unprovoked racist attack, he didn’t know his
killers and vice versa
After the initial police investigation into his death, 5 suspects were arrested, but not convicted of Stephen
Lawrence’s murder
Waiting for a bus with a friend, conversation about bus interrupted by group of white boys across the road
from them, they shouted racist slurs at them, one withdrew weapon from their trousers, immediate fear
and run for their lives, friend ran and Stephen was attacked – stabbed and died
In a dangerous part of London for black boys to be in alone

2. What was the role of the police in dealing with the racist attack on Stephen Lawrence
that sadly led to his death?

Treatment by police was appalling, he was constantly questioned around his integrity and Steve’s
as well. Disbelief that they were innocent and hadn’t done anything wrong
At police station on the night of the murder – questioned about the racial slurs. Senior officers at
the station didn’t believe that they were actually said
Felt like he was in a battle with the police on that night to convince them that they hadn’t done
anything wrong and were innocent
What happened and is taking place in the investigation is what you’d expect to happen, and it
shouldn’t be a matter of faith, trust or belief, it’s what expected of an investigation to happen,
and doesn’t expect any racial prejudice or outside views to come into it
