Unit 12-Crime and its effect on society Marcus Chadwick

Assignment 3

P3, M2

Effects of crime

Crimes impact of society is massive as it affects individuals, communities, minority’s groups and
businesses. The crime that most affect these are anti-social behaviour crimes.

Impact of anti-social behaviour

Anti-social behaviour has a wide range of crimes to commit such as criminal damage to private and
commercial properties. This can be damage to shops, houses, schools and even the highway. Anti-
social behaviour impacts mostly everyone as it can intimidate individuals but more importantly
impact the local authorities as they put a lot of money to ensure the community is safe and clean.
Anti-social behaviours are things such as:

 Vandalism, for example graffiti
 Dumping rubbish in a public area or abandoning cars
 Begging and drinking in public
 Buying and selling drugs in the street
 Aggressive behaviour that could intimidate others
 Rowdy behaviour which could include a large group of people causing a nuisance in the town
centre
 Nuisance neighbours- these happen a lot as some neighbours are quite noisy and disrupt
their neighbours

Public perception of crime

The list above can make the public very fearful of crime however in most cases the fear of crime by
the public is higher than actually being a victim of crime but this means that the safety of the public
is maintained as they are always cautious.

The media

The media has a very large platform. News can be portrays on television, radio, newspapers,
internet, magazines and many more. The media has such a powerful stage in which they can
negatively impact the public by making a less serious crime more newsworthy which strikes more
fear into the public

Fear of crime

When the media and perception of crime is high this means that there will be a higher fear of crime.
There are many reasons why the public may fear crime. These are:

 They live in a high crime area
 They have already been a victim of crime
 The policing in their area is poor
 The public transport is poor in the area
