How the public service support victims and witnesses of crime

Individuals, businesses, whole communities and minority groups are all affected by crime in many
ways. However for an individual there can be an emotional impact for example if you have been
attacked then you may be scared to go out because of the fear that it might happen again. There
could also be a practical impact in which you may be injured or scared in which you have to deal with
that your whole life

Victims of crime

There are all kinds of victims of crime and these are what I’m going to be speaking about below

Businesses

There are many businesses in the UK which is no surprise that crime affects them too. Businesses
can be anything like shops, pubs, warehouses or restaurants. Because they’re a business people
believe that they have lots of money so they target these businesses like shops and steal money
from their till. Theft is a big part of businesses as it can be as little as stealing sweets from a shop or
as big as stealing the till with money in it. Businesses can also be a victim of vandalism or damage to
their businesses as if the shops are closed then people may want to break in which could cause
damage to windows ect. Businesses can also be at risk to crimes such as burglary damage to vehicles
and overalls can affect the business massively as this could increase insurance costs as it could
happen again and also lower staff morale due to their business being a target of crime.

Communities

A community is a misleading word as it could mean a nation, town, city or a street. It can be big or
small and can also be part of a minority group. Community has now fixed meaning which allows
anyone to be part of a community to provide togetherness. Business and communities are affected
differently for crime as if a pub has been burgled then they may not have enough money to staff and
pay for beverages which could cause them to close down which affects only the owners. However if
a community loses items then there togetherness will allow them to pull through as they help each
other. If your area has a high crime rate then this could affect the community massively as it may
lead to vandalism and the area looking run down which could lead to higher house and car insurance
costs as the risk of crime occurring to them assets is high. Because of the crime rate people may not
want to live there and even so people may not want to start businesses there which may decrease
the opportunity for that area to evolve which decreases the quality of life

Groups in society vulnerable to crime

 Children
 Women
 Mentally ill people
 People with learning difficulties
 Lesbian/gay/transgender
