Answer ONE of the following two questions.

QUESTION 1: SOCIAL PERSUASION
Read the following social persuasive text closely and answer the question that follows.

In South Africa, pupils in more than 3 000 schools still use pit toilets

At a high school in rural northern South Africa, more than 300 students and their teachers share
three toilets, and that woefully lopsided figure is not the worst problem.

The three toilets are pit latrines, effectively three-metre holes in the ground, which students line up
during a lunch break to use.

The pit toilets at Seipone Secondary School in the village of Ga-Mashashane, Limpopo, are at
least covered by white toilet seats and enclosed by brick structures. Some of the pit toilets, still
used at more than 3 300 schools in poor, mostly rural areas across South Africa, are not.

It is a shameful situation for a country referred to as the most developed in Africa, and an indicator
of its profound problems with poverty and inequality, say human rights groups, who are pushing
the South African government to do away with the sub-standard facilities in schools.

Unhygienic, the latrines present a much more direct danger.
In January 2014, James Komape, at the nearby Chebeng village, received a phone call asking
him to rush to his five-year-old son's pre-school.

The little boy, Michael, was found dead, drowned at the bottom of a pit latrine. Michael's body had
not even been removed from the pool of water mixed with faeces and urine at the bottom of the pit
he fell into when his father got there.

"What hurt me a lot about Michael's incident is that the people who were there saw that he had
fallen in the toilet, but they did not remove him," said James Komape.

ESSAY

The provided social persuasive text sheds light on the deplorable conditions of sanitation in
South African schools, particularly the widespread use of pit toilets. The target audience
includes policymakers, educators, human rights advocates, and the general public. The

, persuasive purpose of the text is to highlight the severity of the problem, evoke empathy, and
prompt action towards improving sanitation facilities in schools.

The text employs various persuasive strategies to achieve its goal, including appeals to
credibility (ethos), emotion (pathos), and logic (logos), as well as several linguistic devices.

The text establishes credibility by referencing human rights groups who are actively pushing for
change. These groups are typically seen as trustworthy and reliable sources. The mention of Al
Jazeera, a reputable news organization, also lends credibility to the text. The reference to
specific places and real incidents, such as the tragic death of Michael Komape, further adds
authenticity and trustworthiness to the narrative.

Pathos is a central persuasive strategy in this text. The use of emotive language, such as
"shameful situation," "profound problems," and "unhygienic," evokes strong emotions in the
reader. The vivid description of Michael Komape’s death is particularly powerful, as it appeals
directly to the reader’s sense of empathy and horror. The narrative of a father arriving to find his
son drowned in a pit toilet is a poignant image designed to stir deep emotional responses and
highlight the urgent need for change.

The text also uses logical appeals to strengthen its argument. It presents the fact that over
3,300 schools still use pit toilets, a stark statistic that underscores the widespread nature of the
problem. The logical argument is further supported by the statement that South Africa is
considered the most developed country in Africa, yet it faces such basic infrastructural issues.
This juxtaposition highlights the inconsistency and urges the reader to question why such
conditions persist.

The choice of words in the text is deliberate and impactful. Words like "shameful," "woefully,"
and "unhygienic" are chosen to convey a strong sense of disapproval and urgency. The style is
straightforward and unembellished, which makes the severity of the situation more palpable.

The tone of the text is both critical and compassionate. It criticizes the state of sanitation in
schools while showing compassion for the affected students and families. The mood created is
one of urgency and sorrow, compelling the reader to empathize with the situation and feel a
sense of urgency to address it.

One aspect of the text that is particularly striking is its emphasis on the human impact of the
sanitation crisis. Recounting the tragic story of Michael Komape, the text transcends mere
statistics and policy debates, bringing the issue into sharp focus through personal tragedy. The
visceral description of Michael’s death, left unattended at the bottom of a pit latrine, serves as a
stark reminder of the human cost of inadequate sanitation facilities. This narrative not only
evokes empathy and compassion but also serves as a powerful indictment of a system that has
