Tiroides
La glándula tiroides aparece a manera de proliferación epitelial en el
piso de la faringe, entre el tubérculo impar y la cúpula, en un sitio más
tarde indicado por el foramen ciego (Figs. 17-17 y 17-18 A). De manera
subsecuente, la tiroides desciende por delante del intestino faríngeo
como un divertículo bilobulado (Fig.17-18).
Durante esta migración la tiroides permanece conectada con la lengua
por medio de un conducto estrecho, el conducto tirogloso, que
desaparece posteriormente.

Al avanzar el desarrollo, la glándula tiroides desciende por delante del
hueso hioides y los cartílagos laríngeos.
Alcanza su posición final frente a la tráquea en la séptima semana
(Fig. 17-18 B). Para ese momento, ha desarrollado un pequeño istmo en
la línea media y dos lóbulos laterales.
La tiroides comienza a funcionar casi al final del tercer mes, momento
en el cual se visualizan los primeros folículos que contienen coloide.

Las células foliculares producen el coloide que sirve como fuente de
tiroxina y triyodotironina.
Las células parafoliculares, o células C, que derivan del cuerpo
ultimobranquial (Fig. 17-10), son la fuente de la Calcitonina.
