Drugsgebruik vormt een groot probleem in Europa. Hierop maakt Nederland geen uitzondering
(European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, 2017). Drugsgebruik is een
probleem, omdat het verschillende negatieve effecten heeft op het lichaam (Hersenstichting,
sd). Naast schade voor de gebruiker kan het ook schade aan zijn omgeving aanbrengen
(Goossens, 2012). Ondanks de negatieve gevolgen blijven mensen drugs gebruiken. Dat komt
omdat drugs verslavend zijn. We spreken van verslaving wanneer iemand afhankelijk is
geworden van een middel of daad en hier niet mee kan stoppen ondanks medische en sociale
schade die het toebrengt (Kerssemakers, van Meerten, Noorlander, & Vervaeke, 2008). Om
verslaafden te kunnen helpen is het noodzakelijk om inzicht te krijgen in waarom drugs
verslavend zijn. Dit essay geeft antwoord op de vraag; waarom zijn sommige drugs verslavend?
Drugs hebben een effect op de synaptische transmissie in het brein. Kalat (2015)
beschrijft de synaptische transmissie als volgt: synaptische transmissie is het doorgeven van
een prikkel van een neuron naar een ander neuron middels neurotransmitters, een chemische
stof. De functie van een neurotransmitter is het overbrengen van de zenuwprikkel. De
neurotransmitters komen in de synaptische spleet terecht. Deze ligt tussen het presynaptische
neuron en het post synaptische neuron. Hier binden de aanwezige neurotransmitters aan de
receptoren op het post synaptisch neuron. Dit verandert de activiteit van het post synaptisch
neuron. Neurontransmissie kan twee effecten hebben; exciterend of inhiberend. Een
exciterende heeft een stimulerend effect op de zenuwcel, wat leidt tot depolarisatie. Dit vergroot
de kans op een actiepotentiaal. Een inhiberende heeft een remmende werking, wat leidt tot
hyperpolarisatie. Dit verkleint de kans op een actiepotentiaal (Kalat, 2005).
Het uiteindelijke netto-effect op het laatste neuron hangt af van de aard van de
voorgaande neurotransmissies. Kalat (2005) beschrijft dat er in een keten van drie neuronen en
