Thomas@moord.net – Carina Diedericks-Hugo
(The summary includes the old version of the book as well as
changes made in the latest version of it)
CHAPTER 1
Thomas is very upset and we can see that by how he throws a box in the
passage. He’s upset because he doesn’t want to move to another house: he’s
been living there all his life and all his friends stay no more than a few blocks
away from him. They have to move because his stepmother, Louisa, is
pregnant.
Louisa addresses him as “Tom” and he rudely corrects her by telling her to call
him “Thomas.” He hates the fact that his father, Johan, got married again and
he hates the fact that they have to move away from this house because this is
the only place where he still remembers something about his mom.
The doorbell rings and it’s his principal: mnr. Volschenk (his nickname is Oros-
man) and Thomas knows this means trouble! Because the previous day they
bunked the LO-lesson and went to the computer class where Hannes
downloaded the new Guts and Gore IV for the both of them so they can play
against each other simultaneously on their separate computers. Thomas was
very excited because the game isn’t even available in stores yet!
Thomas opens the door slightly and hears mnr. Volschenk tell Louisa that
Thomas and Hannes’s “criminal behavior” lead to a virus infiltrating the school
system.

, Then Thomas hears Louisa’s deep, soft voice reply that she appreciates mnr.
Volschenk coming over to discuss this matter on a Saturday, no less, and that
they will definitely speak to Thomas about this incident, but she also wants to
use this opportunity to mention that this behavior of the two learners is proof
that kids are not interested in hearing about fossils in the Magaliesberg. Not
only do they have a desire and need to receive electronic based education, but
she also thinks the learners would benefit from getting an opportunity every
now and again to explore the internet, within limits of course, to obtain a
global education in this way.
Mnr. Volschenk is taken aback and Thomas smiles: nobody has ever dared
speak to Oros-man like that! Maybe Louisa isn’t all that bad.
Thomas sneaks out by using the bathroom window because he thinks it’s a
good time getting out of the house before his dad comes home and completely
freaks out about the virus! He jogs to Hannes’s house and notices a silver BMW
in the drive way which is a sign that they are home.
Thomas calls Hannes via the intercom system and when the gate opens,
Thomas makes sure that he closes it properly again because the dog,
Nikodemus, ran out the one time and almost made it to Seepunt.
They go to Hannes’s room and Hannes’s mom tells Thomas to remember
Louisa’s desert bowl before he goes home which tells us that not only are the
boys good friends, but their parents as well.
Thomas tells Hannes about mnr. Volschenk’s visit and then they hear the
phone (in the latest, updated version of the book, it is cellphone) ringing in the
background. Hannes’s mom knocks on the door and tells them that she has to
go out for a short while, but that she left them some money to go to the
movies or something and asks that they please just be careful.
They decide to go to the Waterfront where they will first stop by the CD-shop
(in the latest, updated version of the book, they go to the mall) and then go to a
movie later.
CHAPTER 2
Thomas slams the door shut behind him: he’s very angry. When he got home
that afternoon, his dad yelled at him because Thomas left Louise alone to
unpack all the boxes by herself. He feels that it wasn’t his job because he didn’t
