Safeguarding children in the early years-Task 2
Introduction:
For this assignment I will be responding to 2 case studies that express concerns relating to concerns
about children's welfare. I plan to respond to these case studies in the correct way and how you
should safeguard and promote the welfare of the children. The first case study that I will be
responding to is about a 6 year old boy and the second case study is about a 3 year old girl. I hope to
cover the correct procedures that should be followed in each case and the roles and responsibilities
in helping the children in order to protect their self to reduce the risk of abuse and so that children
can recognise and respond to abuse whenever it may happen. I will also be linking this to the current
legislation .
Types and indicators of abuse:
In the topic of abuse, there are four types; physical, neglect, emotional and sexual abuse. Abuse such
as domestic and female genital mutilation fall into one of the four types of abuse categories.
Physical:
The indicators that will become apparent for physical abuse if it is happening will be the following:
-Bruises
-Bites or scalds
-Any other health problems such as respiratory issues or effects of poisoning such as vomiting
-Bite marks
-Fractures or broken bones
Physical abuse towards a child is intentional and is where the child is physically hurt or injured. For
example, if you were to hit, kick, burn or scald a child then this would be physical abuse. Physical
abuse can also happen by using objects to do this. Such as suffocation or throwing an object at the
child. If a child is going through physical abuse then their behaviour may dramatically or slightly
change to how it was beforehand. Some of the changes you should look out for are; clinginess,
aggressive, issues sleeping as this may be when it occurs, nightmares, changes in eating habits, bed
wetting, acts withdrawn, obsessive behaviour and not wanting to go to school which results in
missing school. As well as the short term effects of physical abuse such as bruises and bumps there
can be serious and long lasting effects. For example, if the child had been hit or shaken then this
could cause their physical or mental health to be at risk in later life. This may mean that they have
depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, behavioural issues and many more issues that can occur
from physical abuse, this could affect their education as well. As a statistic 1 in 14 children have been
physically abused. There are different legislations for the protection of children such as the children
act 1984 and the 2004 act which strengthened this act. The act places duty on local authorities to
promote the well being of the children. When children are attending school/ nursery with marks and
injuries that can't be explained then this is a sign of abuse or they are being given a reason but they
