HOOFDSTUK 13 §1 ETENJij kauwt een hap brood in ongeveer 10 seconde weg. Een hond kauwt nog geen seconde op zijn eten
en een koe kauwt wel 5 minuten voor zij een hap gras doorslikken. Die verschillen komen door wat
ze eten.
1. Koeien en andere planteneters eten plantaardig voedsel. Dit voedsel is moeilijk fijn te krijgen
doordat rondom plantencellen taaie celwanden zitten. Planteneters malen het voedsel met
plooikiezen. Die kiezen hebben harde richels (plooien) op het kauwvlak. Die richels lopen
dwars op de kauwrichting. Het voedsel wordt zo goed fijngemalen.
2. Honden en andere vleeseters eten dierlijk voedsel. Vlees bestaat ut dierlijke cellen zonder
celwanden, daardoor is het gemakkelijk fijn te malen. Vleeseters hebben grote scherpe
hoektanden en knipkiezen. Met de hoektanden doden en verscheuren vleeseters hun prooi.
De knipkiezen werken als een schaar en knippen het blees in stukjes. Vleeseters slikken de
stukjes vlees zonder te kauwen door.
3. Varkens en mensen eten plantaardig en dierlijk voedsel. Zij heten daarom alleseters.
Alleseters hebben knobbelkiezen. Deze kiezen kunnen het voedsel goed pletten en malen.
De snij- en hoektanden bijten het eten af.
