Types of Computer Games
With gaming recently becoming a large influence on society and the market becoming bigger and
bigger on a daily basis, it is important to learn what different games are available and how they are
played by people around the world.
Different genres
The first thing to consider is the large variety of different game genres available for people to explore
and find what they would like to gravitate towards when gaming.
Role playing games (RPGs)
A role-playing game is a game that allows the player to take control of a fictional character. This
character is tasked with completing a quest that takes place in an imaginary world. The player will
define how their character behaves and how they complete objectives. This can be done by either
literally acting with a character to create a movie-like scene in game or by completing a series of
structured and informed decision that influence character development. Modern RPG games will
involve a range of different gameplay elements that make this genre stand out from others. For
example, the popular RPG game Fallout 4 allows the player to take control of an intricate perk chart
that gives the character special abilities. Each perk will usually come at a cost to the player and the
method of this cost varies from game to game. In Fallout, there is an XP system that allows the
player to level up their character. Once they gain enough experience points, they will be granted a
skill point that they can spend upgrading the skill tree.

Another, key, elements of an RPG game is a central story quest. Throughout the game, the player
will have to complete a series of quests to progress through the in game story. A long the way,
different NPCs (non-playable characters) will be introduced in to the story. Furthermore, as well as
the main quest, a number of side quests can allow the player to explore more details of the world
and story that would normally be disregarded. Side quests are not important to developing the story
of the game but can grant the player with better equipment, abilities, more experience points, etc.
