“The Cell of Creativity”
Gusts of wind and heavy raindrops rattled the barbed-wire fence and pounded upon the
khaki-green nylon of the tent. Inside, amongst a mass of bodies, thousands of kilometres
from his home, sat Behrouz Boochani. A dissident of the Iranian Government’s human rights
abuses - Boochani had been forced to flee his country, ultimately finding himself in a
detention camp on Manus Island. Despite an existence characterised by apparent
hopelessness, Boochani protested his imprisonment not through violent reprisal, but with a
pen. He began contacting advocacy groups and journalists with poems and articles,
compiling, through messages on a phone, his memoir “No Friend But the Mountains”, a
piece widely acclaimed throughout Australia, reinvigorating advocacy for the rights of
refugees. Boochani’s work contributed to his eventual physical freedom from detention, but
perhaps more profoundly, signified a metaphoric liberation from the voicelessness and
subjugation which had immured him behind the barbed wire.
