D1 Explain how successful a selected business organisation has been in preparing for the
growing use of e-business
In this task, I will be using eBay as an example to evaluate how a successful business organisation has
been in preparation for the growing use of e-business.
EBay is an American multinational e-commerce which you can sell and buy items through their
websites to millions of customers around the world. EBay that facilitates a consumer-to-consumer
(C2C) and business-to consumer (B2C) sales through its web, which means the transactions of
products or service between consumers as well as well as selling and providing products/service to
private consumers. EBay is a commercial website which has two main purposes. The first purpose is
for online sales as consumers and other businesses sell and purchase products from the web. The
second purpose is to provide the users of the website with a wide range of information about
products and service as well as help the consumers to communicate with the buyers and the
company as well. The segmentations of EBay’s users appear to be the majority males and women
which are ranged at the age from 25-35 years old. Most of the users do not have children and have a
lower education level.
In the fourth quarter of 2005, 10 years after eBay was founded, total sales were $12 billion. In 2008
eBay bragged that if it was a traditional retailer, it would be the sixth largest (measured by sales
volume) in the United States. Moreover, according to researches, at the end of 2017 eBay had 168
million 12-months active buyers and sellers, which is a huge increased comparing to 90 million active
in 2010. This huge increase of using eBay website via internet shows that it nearly two-thirds of
transactions are now international.
EBay offers customers to sell and purchases a wide arrange of different products and service
worldwide. The products range from fashion and home &garden, to electronics and health and
beauty, to many other wide range of different products for personal and business use. EBay provides
very easy service for customers to be happy whether they are a seller or buyers, as they aims to
make the purchasing process very easy and satisfied process for customers. As they have one their
unique selling point known as ‘’buy it now’’ feature which enable the customer to buy the products
they want easily and fast without making it complicate process. Comparing to other competitors
such as Amazon, eBay selling a wide range of product for a reasonable prices which help to meet
customers’ needs and expectations.
Although, eBay does not have a physical store where customer can go and visit, however they have
only an online website which therefore help customers who have a busy life and cannot make to
visit their store. This will benefit customers as they provide a very easy process to both searching
and buy the products they want during the time they are available whether they are on the car or on
their break time. Therefore, their online website offer customers with all the products available in
the stock alongside with their delivery service for customers to use. One of the useful strategies that
eBay has used to develop their e-business is by making their business a 24 hours global presences.
Since the fact that eBay is an international e-business, the had to offer 24 hours online website;
because they are not only sell products to customer who live in a specific place such the United
Kingdom, they do sell their products to customers around the world. This is because it is important
for them to have a 24 hours website to meet customer’s products demand as well as providing
customer services in different time zones around the world. Moreover, having a 24 hours website
will benefit both eBay and its customers, as most of the customers does not have the time to
purchase products during the working hours and they would prefer to buy products at night where
they are free to do it.
