Bij een bevruchting versmelt de kern van een haploïde zaadcel (n) met de kern van een
haploïde eicel tot een diploïde zygote (2n). Je krijgt dan 23 chromosomen van je vader en 23
chromosomen van je moeder. Chromosomen bestaan uit DNA opgerold rond steuneiwitten
(Binas 70A). Het DNA bevat de erfelijke informatie over je eigenschappen. De chromosomen
van je vader en moeder vormen paren in de bevruchte eicel homologe chromosomen
(bron 1). De vorm en grootte van deze chromosomen zijn gelijk. Chromosomen bestaan voor
de S-fase van een celcyclus (Binas 76A) uit een enkel DNA-molecuul. In de S-fase ontstaat
hiervan een kopie, waardoor het chromosoom, direct na de S-fase, uit twee chromatiden
bestaat die aan elkaar vastzitten bij het centromeer. In een karyogram zie je de
chromosomen overzichtelijk gerangschikt. Hierin kun je het geslacht en afwijkingen in het
aantal chromosomen aflezen.
