WHAT ARE THE AIMS AND FUNCTIONS OF THE EU?Four features / four freedoms of the EU
● The core economic aspiration of European integration is expressed through the
‘four freedoms’, which were set out originally in the Treaty of Rome and
envisaged a single European market
● All member states under the four freedoms should allow:
-The free movement of goods - no tariffs on goods in order to create a customs
union
-The free movement of services – businesses should be able to open up and
operate in any member state
-The free movement of capital – capital should be able to move freely
throughout the member states
-The free movement of people – no internal barriers should stop citizens of the
EU working in any member state and being able to claim the same social
benefits
-The intention was that these would ensure prosperity through
interconnections. The EU has pursued an even closer union in terms of social,
political and monetary union, as well as developing closer foreign policy and
defence objectives

● The European Commission - Are nominated by national governments and
approved by the European Parliament.It initiates draft legislation, executes the
EU legislation, administers spending and represents the EU internationally
