Grieken woonden niet in 1 staat, maar waren verdeelt over 700
verschillende stadstaten
Stadstaat heet in het Grieks een polis
o Polis: stad met omringend land
Vaak werden ze gebouwd om een heuvel: Akropolis, hier
konden bewoners naartoe vluchten tijdens oorlog. Later
waren ze niet meer nodig en kwam er een tempel
Stadstaten werden van elkaar gescheiden door bergketens en water.
o Meeste waren heel klein met 1000 inwoners.
Alleen Athene en Sparta waren veel groter
Overeenkomsten tussen stadstaten:
o Eigen wetten en eigen bestuur
o Overal praatten ze Grieks
o Dezelfde goden
o Bouwden op dezelfde manier tempels
Grieken voelden zich meer inwoner van hun eigen polis en daarna een

Slavernij
In Griekse stadstaten was grote ongelijkheid tussen mensen
o Verschil tussen vrije mensen en slaven
Slavernij was in oud Griekenland heel normaal.
Je kon slaaf worden tijdens oorlog, maar ook geboren
o Slaven waren heel belangrijk voor Griekse economie.
Zwaar werk: landbouw en mijnen
Bedrijfjes, winkeltjes en huishouden
Onderwijs
o Bijna elk huishouden had slaven.
o Stadbesturen hadden slaven voor klussen
Grieken zagen slaven als huisdieren.
