Unit 4: Business Communications
Assignment One – Purposes and Sources
In this assignment, Transport for London (TFL), will be used as an example to show how
businesses source information and what the purpose of the information is. Examples of how
TFL uses information will be used, evaluated and then compared to Mersey rail in order to
establish effective methods of communication within a business.
P1 - Explain different types of business information, their sources
and purposes
It is important that a business research information from a variety of sources before making
important decisions. There are several different types of information that can be sourced for
research.
Firstly, verbal information involves communicating face to face. This is the most effective
way to communicate as there is less likely to be any misunderstandings. Despite this being
the best way to communicate, it can often be difficult for people to meet in a business as it
takes a lot of time and there is a set budget within the business. If face to face meetings are
not possible, telephone convocations can also be a good way to communicate. Verbal
information is an extremely important way to communicate within a business. It allows the
expression of more complex ideas that may be hard to deliver in writing. You can still
communicate well using other methods but verbal communication is often the preferred
way. It is a fast way to communicate meaning it is very useful for a business. Even though it
can be useful, verbal communication is often used in times of disagreement in order to find
a resolution for the issue. Therefore, it can be essential to avoid further conflicts that could
potentially impact the business. For TFL, they use announcements in order to give updates
to anyone using their service. This is an essential way to communicate a message quickly.
Furthermore, TFL’s staff would have meetings in order to communicate to make decisions
showing that verbal communication is key for a business to run smoothly.
Furthermore, information can also be from a written source. This involves using physical
representations such as words, diagrams and graphs. If some information involves numbers
it is considered to be written information. It would be extremely challenging for a business
