14 COGNITIEVE STOORNISSEN EN STOORNISSEN DIE SAMENHANGEN MET OUDERWORDEN
14.1. INLEIDING
Neurocognitieve stoornissen:
- Ontstaan door hersenziekten en hersenletsel die de hersenen aantasten en de stoornis doet
ontstaan
- Worden gediagnosticeerd op basis van beperkingen in het cognitieve functioneren:
▪ Opvallende abrupte verandering door letsel of beroerte ten opzichte van het eerdere
functioneren
▪ Of progressieve langzame achteruitgang door bv. Alzheimer ten opzichte van het eerdere
functioneren
Maar hoe dan ook hebben ze dus een organische oorzaak!
Opgelet: Om de link met de hersenen aan te tonen (= organische oorzaak), spreken we sinds DSM-5 niet
meer van cognitieve stoornissen maar neurocognitieve stoornissen
Deze stoornissen voldoen dus
aan de echte betekenis van
diagnose doordat ze een
duidelijk aantoonbare fysieke
oorzaak hebben
Hoewel de oorsprong dus duidelijk biologisch is, zijn er ook andere invloeden:
- Grote invloed van:
▪ Psychologische factoren
▪ Omgevingsfactoren
→ Bij het bepalen van de impact en het scala van beperkende/invaliderende
symptomen + copingsvaardigheden (= iemands vermogen om een situatie te
hanteren)
- De omvang en ernst van verslechtering in functioneren, is dan weer afhankelijk van:
▪ Hoeveelheid beschadigd hersenweefsel
▪ De locatie van de beschadiging
▪ Die psychologische en omgevingsfactoren
