VBSC 421 Body Cavities, Mesenteries, and
Digestive System
Parietal peritoneum (shark) - ANS-the serous membrane which lines the coelom (outer
layer)
(C)
Visceral peritoneum (shark) - ANS-serous covering of the suspended organs (inner
layer)
(C)
Pleuroperitoneal cavity (shark) - ANS-the space which contains the abdominal visceral
and swim bladder (entire cavity)
Greater omentum (mesogaster) (shark) - ANS-the mesentary which extends from the
dorsal body wall to the dorsal surface of the esophagus and stomach
Gastrosplenic ligament (shark) - ANS-extends between the stomach and spleen
Mesentery proper (shark) - ANS-supports the entire length of the valvular intestine
Mesocolon (shark) - ANS-supports the rectal gland and rectum (colon)
--> look for rectal gland
Falciform ligament (shark) - ANS-extends from the anterior end of the liver to the
mid-ventral body wall
Lesser omentum (gastrohepatoduodenal ligament) (shark) - ANS-extends from the liver
to the duodenum and encloses the bile duct and blood vessels- associated with
digestive organs
Mesorchium (shark) - ANS-Only in male
Suspends the testes from the dorsal body wall (find testes first)
Mesovarium (shark) - ANS-Only in female
Suspends the oviduct from the dorsal body wall
Teeth (shark) - ANS-one or two rows, serrated, triangular
, - Derived from mesodermal, ectodermal, and neural crest tissues
Oral cavity (shark) - ANS-Extends from lingual surface of the teeth to the spiracles
"Tongue" (shark) - ANS-the slightly raised floor of the oral cavity supported by the hyoid
arch
(No muscles- not a true tongue)
Pharynx (shark) - ANS-space common to the digestive and respiratory systems that
extends *from the spiracle to the opening of the esophagus*
Internal gill slits (shark) - ANS-There are 5 (seen internally)
Esophagus (shark) - ANS-lumen of the esophagus is lined by papillae
Stomach (shark) - ANS-elongated and J-shaped, curved portion faces left
Cardiac region (shark) - ANS-short upper portion of the stomach; closest to esophagus
Greater curvature (shark) - ANS-outer convex surface
Lesser curvature (shark) - ANS-inner concave surface
Rugae (shark) - ANS-longitudinal folds of the stomach
Duodenum (shark) - ANS-short, proximal portion of intestine
Valvular intestine (shark) - ANS-second part of the small intestine, longer and thicker
with spiral valves
Spiral valve (shark) - ANS-within valvular intestine
Rectum (shark) - ANS-most distal part of the intestine
Anus (shark) - ANS-terminal portion of the intestine
Cloaca (shark) - ANS-opening at the end of the digestive tract
Rectal gland (shark) - ANS-fingerlike gland which opens into the rectum, secretes highly
concentrated sodium chloride into the rectum, aiding in osmoregulation
