, QUESTION 1
Why does exclusion persist despite the adoption of inclusive
education?
Explore the above question by writing an in-depth analysis of the
following:
How your experiences of power, equity, inclusion, and social
difference have influenced your understanding of inclusive
education. (10)
Despite the adoption of policies for inclusive education, these students are
still excluded from schools in South Africa. As such, my experiences with
power, equity, inclusion, and social diversity have enriched my
understanding of the processes that underpin this ongoing exclusion.
Due to apartheid policies, the enormous imbalance of power between
blacks and whites in the South African education system has shaped
educational equality. From my observation, one gets the impression that
there is a systematic arrangement whereby one group will dominate the
other and hence control the treatment, and distribution of resources when
they exist. For instance, even today, some communities lacked access to
quality education in the past and this is evident in the poor schools they
are served by today.
Inclusive education requires the disruption of these power relations by
bringing in decision-making structures alongside marginalized groups
(UNISA, 2023). But such systemic power relations are deeply structural
and therefore difficult to shift. According to Fiske and Ladd (2004),
apartheid effects are still visible, and its effect has seen the division
between standard schools and poor schools hence perpetuating
inequality.
