Het begrip
De term sociale cohesie wordt gebruikt om de samenhang in de samenleving aan te
geven, anders gezegd de mate waarin mensen zich met elkaar verbonden voelen in een
bepaalde groep, buurt, woonplaats etc. Er is dus sprake van sociale cohesie als mensen
zich verbonden voelen.

Verzuiling
Mensen voelen zich tot elkaar verbonden als ze iets gemeenschappelijks hebben, een
voorbeeld hiervan is religie. Nederland kende tot de jaren zestig een verzuilde
samenleving, de zuilen waren gebaseerd op geloof en/of maatschappelijke oriëntatie.
Binnen de zuilen was de sociale cohesie zeer sterk.

Micro-, meso- en macroniveau
Sociale cohesie bestaat op micro- meso- en macroniveau. Op microniveau zie je sociale
cohesie binnen een gezin, familie of vriendenkring. Op mesoniveau voornamelijk binnen
een buurt of wijk, denk bijvoorbeeld aan buurtverenigingen. Macroniveau gaat over
sociale cohesie in de samenleving in de maatschappij.
