allocation for the MCQs you should try not to spend more than about
58 minutes on them.
 Make sure you have entered your student number by filling in the ap-
propriate bubbles as shown. Failure to enter your student number
correctly could result in 0 for the MCQs.
 Do not fill in a bubble in the group column next to your student number.
 Make sure you start at question 1 not 101 on the answer card.
 Entering more than one answer for a question will result in 0 marks. If
you change an answer make sure you completely erase your first one or
ask for a new sheet. Failure to erase well enough could result in
0 marks for the question if the computer reads both answers.
Written Questions
If you do not use the space provided, please state clearly where your answer is.
Draw diagrams where appropriate. Marks are allocated for diagrams.
Show all work, clearly and in order, if you want to get full credit. Justify the steps
you take to ensure full marks. We reserve the right to take of f marks if we cannot see
how you arrived at your answer (even if your final answer is correct). Please keep your
written answers brief; be clear and to the point. We reserve the right to take points off
for rambling, incorrect or irrelevant statements.

A 6.0 kg block is free to slide on a smooth horizontal surface. The block is anchored to
two facing walls by springs as shown above. The spring on the left has a spring constant
k1 = 100 N/m while the spring on the right has a spring constant k1 = 200 N/m. Both
springs are initially at their relaxed length. Let the equilibrium position of the block be
x0 = 0.00 m.
(a) (3 pts) Suppose the block is displaced a small distance x to the right away from its
equilibrium position, draw a free body diagram for the block. Remember to include all
the forces on the block.
(b) (3 pts) Suppose the block is displaced a small distance x to the right, show that the
magnitude of the horizontal force on the block is proportional to x (ie. |Fx | ∝ x), and
determine the constant of proportionality, keff . The constant kef f is called the effective
spring constant since this can be thought of as describing the effect of a single spring.
