These revision notes delve into the developmental programs that control brain wiring to understand the cues that trigger neurons to take the correct shape and connect with appropriate partners. My revision notes also concisely explore how understanding neural circuit assembly suggests ways of treat...

Neural Circuits

Hippocampus and Place Learning (declarative learning)

What are the 4 types of Implicit Memory?
 Priming
 Procedural
 Associative Learning
 Non-associative learning

What are the two types of explicit memory?
 Semantic
 Episodic

Hippocampus lecture outline:
– Site of learning?
– Organization of the hippocampus
Place Learning
– The involvement of the hippocampus
– Rapid learning and pattern completion

Episodic and semantic memory
th
 Ribot (French 19 century psychologist) noted that memory loss after
brain injury often varied with the age of the memory:
 Recent episodic and semantic memories more susceptible to loss
than remote ones.
 Led to the suggestion that memories are re-organized over time,
relying first on a brain region specialized for rapid storage, and
then on a region in which consolidation takes longer.
 It is now supposed that the
 Hippocampus is a region for the rapid acquisition
 Neo-cortex for slower consolidation of memories.
 The modern story starts with a patient known as HM.

Who was HM and what did we learn from him?
 Temporal lobe removed
 Removed the hippocampus
 Old memories intact
 No retention of new memories (anterograde amnesia)
 Every time HM met his psychologist he introduced himself as if he never
met her
