Toxocara canis or cati- symptoms - ANS-most people are asymptomatic
Fever, cough, inflammation of the liver, pneumonia, inflammation or scaring of the retina
(irreversible vision loss)
Trypanosoma cruzi- life cycle - ANS-Triatomine bugs suck blood from an infected
individual, the parasite then passes into the bugs feces. The bug will bite a human and
then defecate after they have fed, the parasite being in the feces will then attempt to
enter the skin or mucus membrane of the human. The cycle begins again when the
newly infected individual gets bitten by another triatomine bug.
Trypansoma cruzi- symptoms - ANS-Acute: fever, swelling (sometimes around heart or
brain)
Chronic: 70-80% asymptomatic for life, arrhythmic heart beat, dilated heart, dilated
Esophagus or colon
Taenia solium- symptoms - ANS-Cysts in the brain or spinal chord: neurocysticercosis,
sometimes asymptomatic, seizures, headaches, confusion, issues with balance, brain
swelling, excess fluid around the brain
Cysts in the muscles: generally asymptomatic, may cause lumps under skin that can be
tender
Taenia solium-transmission - ANS-Transmitted when eggs of the adult tapeworm are
consumed. Adult tapeworm contracted through eating undercooked pork. The adult
tapeworm then lays eggs which exit in the persons feces, a person is infected if these
eggs are ingested (through contaminated food or water).
Taenia solium-life cycle - ANS-human passes eggs in feces > pig (IH) eats feces >
Cysticercus develops in skeletal muscle > human eats infected pork
