,GCSE Geography Paper 3 (Geographical Skills) Revision Information
The Exam
• 1 ½ hours long
• Three sections:
• Investigating physical environments (rivers)
• Investigating human landscapes (central/inner urban area)
• UK Challenges

How to Prepare
• Use this booklet, work through every section on the revision list and use the following to make notes:
• Your class notes (exercise book / folder)
• Textbook (the one with the cow on the front)
• Practise the questions in this booklet and use the mark schemes to check your answers
• Read through the example student answers and examiner comments to identify the level of detail
needed to get full marks and also the common mistakes which you should avoid

Top Revision Tips
For each item on the revision list:
✓ Look the answer up
✓ Make sure you understand it – try saying it out loud, practise explaining it to someone
✓ Make revision notes on it (don’t just copy from your book – summarise)
✓ Hide your notes and then test yourself (look – cover – say – write – check)
✓ Write yourself some practise questions / a quiz and use them to test yourself
✓ Try to answer the example exam questions and mark it with the mark scheme
✓ Go back over areas you can’t remember or are getting confused on
✓ Teach your friends or family (it’s proven that you learn more by teaching others and finding ways to
explain it clearly to them rather than just trying to remember it yourself)
✓ Test your friends

What type of questions to expect:
Rivers fieldwork* Urban fieldwork* UK challenges
(total 18 marks) (total 18 marks) (total 24 marks + 4 SPaG)

1 mark 3 questions 4 questions

2 marks 2 questions 2 questions

3 marks 1 question 2 questions

4 marks 1 question 1 question

8 marks 1 question 1 question

12 marks 1 question

*Note that the mark allocation for the two fieldwork sections could be either way around. For one section, you will get short
structured questions relating to fieldwork in general, with some requiring calculations and an 8 mark question about your own
fieldwork and on the other section the short (3+4 mark) questions will be about your fieldwork and the 8 mark question will
relate to a fieldwork-based resource. See the next page for examples of both types of question.

,Command Words and Exam Technique – Fieldwork Questions
The following command words will be use in your exam. Make sure you know what each one means and
how you should structure your answer in each case.

Short answer questions
In these questions it is very important that you look at the number of marks available and make the same
number (or more) points in your answer.
It is also important to read the question carefully to see whether you are required to give multiple factors or
reasons or whether the examiner is looking for you to develop one idea in detail.

1-2 mark questions
These questions will always be on unseen fieldwork data or resources
• Identify / state
• These are often multiple choice questions
• Maximum one sentence needed
• Often a one or two word answer will do
e.g. Study Figure 3. State the purpose of this recording sheet. (1 mark)
State one piece of equipment, other than a flow meter, that students would need to use to investigate river
discharge
Identify the median deprivation score. (1 mark)

• Calculate
• Use mathematical skills to work out the answer – you must show your working if asked for this.
e.g. Calculate the interquartile range of the deprivation score. Show your working. (2 marks)
Calculate the mean and median depth of the river. (2 marks)

2-4 mark questions
These questions will be about your own fieldwork for one of the sections and about hypothetical fieldwork in
the other section
• Explain
• Give reasons as to how or why something occurs. Many questions will ask you to explain ONE reason, but
the question will be worth more than one mark. For these questions it is important that you develop your
first point using phrases such as “this means that…” and “as a result…” to get the marks for development
points.
About your own fieldwork:
e.g. Explain one advantage of the sampling strategy you used when investigating river discharge. (2 marks)
Explain one factor that may have affected the reliability of your results. (3 marks)
Explain one way in which secondary data supported your understanding of your river enquiry. (3 marks)
Explain one disadvantage of the sampling strategy you used. (4 marks)
About hypothetical fieldwork
e.g. Explain one reason why the deprivation data shown has been plotted as a dispersion diagram. (2 marks)
Explain one reason why the students chose a stratified approach. (3 marks)

, Command Words and Exam Technique – Fieldwork Questions
The following command words will be use in your exam. Make sure you know what each one means and
how you should structure your answer in each case.

8 mark questions
For these questions spend a minute planning your answer before you start – think about which key points
you want to make and what order you are going to write about them. You should make one main point per
paragraph, using the acronym PEEL to help structure each paragraph (Point – Example – Explain – Link).

• Assess
• You may be asked to assess the different enquiry questions that you could ask about river or urban
environments. This is likely to be based on a resource such as a photograph or map. You should include
details from the resource to discuss how feasible it would be to investigate different questions.
• One enquiry question that could be investigated is (Point) … – for Example on the map/photograph
you can see … – this means that it would be interesting to investigate because / possible to access
because … (Explain) – and therefore it would be a good question (Link)
• Another enquiry question that could be investigated is … Point – Example – Explain – Link
• (Conclusion) Overall I believe that the best question to investigate would be … because
e.g. Study Figure 1. For Figure 1, assess the different enquiry questions about river environments that you
might investigate. (8 marks)

• Evaluate
• For these questions you need to refer to one or more of your case studies. You need to discuss the
positives/successes and negatives/failures.
• Your answer should be balanced but end with a detailed conclusion which gives your own opinion, along
with your reasons for having that opinion (justification).
• On the one hand, Point – Example – Explain – Link
• On the other hand, Point – Example – Explain – Link
• In conclusion, I think that … because …
e.g. Evaluate the different techniques used to analyse your fieldwork data. (8 marks)
Evaluate the reliability of your conclusions
Study Figure 3. Evaluate the student’s methods and findings
