1.1 Give and explain five learning handwriting activities that are of benefit to their
development. Use multisensory methods when engaging learners with these
activities ( adapted from Morin, 2019)
• Tracing the top and bottom lines where the learner needs to write :
- Using dark lined paper – this can be done by using a dark coloured felt –
tipped pen or better yet a pastel or wax crayon so not only is it a visual
indicator of where the lines are but also a textural indicator on the learners
hand.
- Gluing along the lines so that when it is dry the learner has another
textural indicator as to when their letters have reached the top or bottom of
the line.
• Tracing and doing mazes develops learner’s eye – hand coordination and fine
motor control, especially if they need to try stay inside the line when following a
maze or pattern.
- Following lines across a page.
- Tracing around objects, for example letter magnets, scissors, blocks etc.
- Trace letters by rolling out prices of playdough and laying them out in the
form of the letter.
• Using chalk, write a letter on the chalkboard or concrete surface and ask the
learners to practice writing the same letter using a wet sponge. Remember to te

• Create an alphabet freeze using different tactile and patterned material for each
letter, materials such as sandpaper, bubble wrap, pipe cleaners and string works
well for this.
